if maybe if you go spec for spec but often times you end up having to pay for a bunch of crap you do not need or want to get what you want from Apple.
Take this. I needed/wanted a 15in Laptop higher res screen and i7 processor. I bought it for around $1500. Same laptop from Apple over 2 grand. I was willing to give up the alumium body and battery life because they were not as high on my list.
Or try this one. Someone wants a 17 (hell even 15 in) screen but only really need a core duo or a i3 processor. If they went Apple they have to pay a huge tax to pay for all the extra crap they do not want/need just to get that 15 or 17 in screen they want/need.
Apple Tax is in the form of having to buy a bunch of extra crap you do not need/want to get the few items that you do need/want.
Very true - component for component, Mac's are the same as Windows-based PCs. In which case, the only argument that can be tendered about the supposed "Mac Tax" is that Apple simply does not make a low-end computer.
In the end, with prices neutral, it boils down to personal preference and user experiences - in which case, if you use Windows and love it (whether it gives you problems or not), that's what you get. The funny thing is that everybody argues these points over and over but in the end it boils down to what the user prefers, nothing more. I base my opinions on my experience, those of others I know (both who use Macs and who don't), tempered with what I read in legitimate publications, which is all that can be expected of anyone.

Thunderbolt will solve this. TB to Gigabit Ethernet adapter will definitely deliver 1Gb/s (800Mb/s due to 8/10b encoding).
Still, my point stands- you need to purchase another adapter, carry it around, and have it dangle off your computer when a simple internal ethernet port would solve the problem.
They should, at the very least, bundle it with a 1k+ computer (like they used to).

I installed the new version last night, sync'd my contacts... What that did was put profile pictures and facebook page links to any friends I had in my addressbook.... The addresses migrated and sync'd no problem but the app itself is crashing so much that i had to delete it, reinstalled the old version from my computer and everything is back to normal on my phone within the facebook app... The page links still connect directly to friends facebook pages directly from my addressbook... I would wait to upgrade until they fix all the problems... Oh yeah the links do not work from addressbook on your mac, only within the iphone and from that addressbook

I have noticed that a lot of the new folders (including myself) are folding a lot of points for the team, great to see :)
I have now hit the 6k red colour for folding :cool: Need some more competition now on the lower score table :p (no point trying to chase the others ;)

First post, been on the site for a while though. Couldn't hold back and bought an iPad, tried to sell me some accessories but didn't really push too hard. Pretty excited and a GREAT DEAL!! 16GB

Damn. The map-download thing is the one thing keeping me from buying this immediately. I have both TomTom and Navigon's apps and switch between the two from time to time because neither does what I want - basically, I've wanted the Garmin experience on the Iphone but the freedom of the Iphone (and updates, etc. the apps have allowed.)
My guess is that the maps download to your phone and are not constantly being pulled in, so a mapped-out drive from one city to another that passes through a dead zone isn't going to result in an area with no maps. But that one small issue of getting stuck in a no-coverage area and desperately needing it is worrisome.
That said, Garmin has everything else covered here -traffic, map updates, etc. The download issue really should be a minimal problem for most people who aren't traveling in iffy areas. I *really* want to get back to using a Garmin product without buying a standalone unit.

RFID is insecure. The british RFID passports have been cracked within less than 48 hours, the German test ones in less than a day. I wouldn't trust RFID for any important and sensible information like payment services. It's fine for stuff like tracking packages or my skiing card - but that's it.
If it is so insecure, why haven't we heard of all the peoplebeing ripped off where it's used quite extensively?

I would post it myself but I deleted the PM a last week by mistake when I was cleaning out my inbox.
I will say it was a great read and I agree with it.
We do need to raises taxes as right now they are at record lows and clearly THEY ARE NOT WORKING. Instead due to the record lows things are getting worse and more things are having to be cut. On top of that most of these stats were warned years prior that if they cut those taxes that in a few years it will come back to hurt them big time. This was made worse by economic downturn and so budget shortfalls were even worse than what was projected.
All service cut do is hurt 90% of the people for the top 5% of the income earns that they help.
If you look at most of the tax cuts they are only for the top earners. Main street gets nothing but services cut. Tax cuts never effect them. GOP screams Tax cuts tax cuts but then you look at it the cuts do not help most of us. Instead they only hurt us.
Also a kicker. the more you make the less each dollar saved helps. Tax cut at the top means money lost in revenue for the goverement but you MIGHT see 5-10% of that saved money go back into the economy. Most of it goes no were.
Compared to tax cuts or service increase on the middle class and down you will see most of that money go back into the economy.
Tell me if you want to boost the economy were do you put the injection. At the top were you might get 10% of it back or at the bottom were you will see nearly 100% of it back.
GOP wants you to believe that it is at the top. Reality is that it should go at the bottom.

This was one of the most handy little apps that I lost when OS X hit the scene. Super intuitive, super effective.
I have Peak and Pro Tools and neither handle those simple, everyday audio needs like a SoundEdit 16 could.
I very much think there is an audience for Soundbooth and that it will be well received. Based on my experienced with SoundEdit 16, if Soundbooth were Universal, I'd more than likely purchase... immediately.
Amen to that. Nothing I have ever found is as good at simple splicing of uncompressed audio files than SE16. Amadeus comes close, but not cigar, it just doesn't feel like SE16.

Here's the gist of the problem: too generous state worker union pensions. I wouldn't be surprised that these pensions are extensively re-done to drastically cut its cost in order to reduce state budget deficits.
Really? Union pensions are the sole cause of states with financial problems?
So do you have any theories about why states without unions are having the same financial problems? Are these union pensions somehow crossing state lines into South Carolina and causing our budget shortfall?

I disagree. Apple doesn't need to compete with that at all. Android is not taking iPhone sales as long as Apple is selling them as fast as they can make them. In fact, the smaller droids are too small and the larger droids are too large..
The whole idea of business is to sell. Why not try to outsell and take business from other companies? Android is taking sales away from Apple because they are selling a competing product.

Exchange does the same POP/IMAP protocols and if you want your phones to access the system using those protocols on an Exchange server, you'll have to open the same firewall ports... Are your 2 statements even related ? Do you even realise Zimbra's backend is also database driven, except they use a much more standard RDBMS (MySQL) rather than Exchange's proprietary EDB format (which is loosely based on MDB, since both use the JET database engine, a far inferior database format that's more akin to SQLite than to a real RDBMS).

Exchange is a success thanks to Outlook's widespread use, which is thanks to Office's dominance, which achieved it through Windows widespread use on the desktop.
This is typical Microsoft modus operandi and why I have ethical and moral reasons to not work with their products as much as I can personally help it.
Your SQL server example is also short-sighted. A 1/4 the cost of Oracle ? No duh, you're getting 10% of the product. Typical though that people look for Oracle when their needs don't even require it. Can anyone confirm this? It's so annoying when new features are turned on by default. I guess I just need to delete my account. I have a fb, but never check it, but I keep it around just because I get an email if somebody sends me a message on there and then I contact them back. Facebook is just awful, worst mistake signing up for it. If you don't have one DON'T GET ONE!!
